Elijah McClain was a 23 year old unarmed black man who died after being restrained by the police and thereafter got injected by the paramedics in Aurora, Colorado.
The police together with the paramedics made a huge mistake with regards to the stop that was made in Colorado of a 23 year old Elijah McClain in 2019. as a result of which led to the death of Elijah McClain.
The report says that the police officers had no legal basis as to which they could stop McClain on the 24th of August in Denver suburb of Aurora.
McClain who at that time was walking from home from a convenient store was thereby searched by the police officers.
The report continues by saying: ”The officers’ statement on the scene and in subsequent recorded interviews suggest violent and relentless struggle. The limited video, and the audio from the body worn cameras, reveal Mr McClain surrounded by officers, all larger than he, crying out in pain, apologising and explaining himself and pleading with the officers.”
According to the authorities, McClain was thereafter taken into cardiac arrest after he was subdued by 3 police officers during the encounter and injected with 500 milligrams of ketamine (a sedative) by paramedics. he died days later in hospital.
During the encounter, the body camera recorded McClain telling the police that he does not like to be touched and that he is ”different”. in the recording he is later heard apologising and telling the police that he could not breathe as they restrained him.
The independent report says, ”The body worn camera audio, limited video, and Major crimes’ interviews with the officers tell two contrasting stories,”
The death of McClain, who was an amateur violinist who worked as a massage therapist, gained renewed scrutiny during the racial justice protest that went on in the US throughout the summer of 2020 following the police-involved death of George Floyd in May
